Ballistic missiles hit Kyiv residential areas, at least nine killed

Russia fired a wave of ballistic missiles and drones at Kyiv overnight into August 1, killing at least nine people and injuring 33, Ukrainian officials said. The attack struck multiple districts of the capital, including Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi, causing fires and extensive damage to civilian buildings.

A five-storey residential building in Solomianskyi district was hit by debris, triggering a blaze. Emergency workers evacuated 35 people; two died and eight were hurt, including two children. In Darnytskyi district, seven were killed and 14 wounded as fires swept through homes, vehicles, and administrative structures.

Among those killed were Olena Rozhniativska and her 18-year-old daughter Kateryna, employees of the Silpo supermarket chain, who were trying to reach a shelter, the company’s Facebook page stated. A 22-year-old patrol officer, Yehor Terekhin, also died, according to Ukrainian media.

A 20-year-old volunteer instructor, Vitalina Yarovenko, known as Frau, was killed by a second strike after rushing to the site of the first hit to help victims, her training unit at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy reported. She was a psychology student and active in fundraising for the military.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 17 of the wounded were hospitalized. The State Emergency Service reported that rescuers saved and evacuated 105 people from damaged buildings. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said air defenses shot down only one of the incoming ballistic missiles, citing a lack of Patriot interceptor missiles.

Russia’s defense ministry said it carried out a “massive strike” on Ukrainian military-industrial and logistics facilities in Kyiv using precision missiles and attack drones. Lithuania’s foreign minister said the country’s embassy in Kyiv was damaged by nearby blasts.
