Russia, Ukraine trade overnight strikes; seven killed

Russian and Ukrainian forces exchanged overnight strikes on August 8-9, killing at least seven civilians and wounding dozens across both countries, according to local authorities.

In Russia's Belgorod region, Ukrainian drone strikes killed five people and injured two dozen, including a four-year-old boy, the regional administration said. The attacks damaged 29 apartment blocks and five private houses.

In Kharkiv, a Russian missile hit a high-rise in the Saltivskyi district, killing two and injuring 13, according to regional head Oleh Syniehubov. In Odesa, eight more were injured after "dozens of missiles and drones" struck, said local administration head Oleh Kiper.

In Novorossiysk, debris from Ukrainian drones fell on two enterprises and a home, injuring one person, mayor Andrey Kravchenko said. Moscow's defence ministry claimed to have downed 153 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Separately, a drone entered Bulgarian airspace and exploded near an international gas pipeline, but caused no casualties or damage. Bulgaria summoned Ukraine's ambassador, and Ukraine said it did not deliberately target the country.
