The United Kingdom has announced a ban on trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Prime Minister Andy Burnham defended the decision, saying Britain must stand for fairness against injustice where people are being bullied out of their homes.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Parliament that settler terrorists were carrying out ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. He listed houses bulldozed, roads destroyed, and families displaced. The government also banned arms exports that materially contribute to the occupation.
The measures cover imports of all goods from settlements and services such as construction, financing, and real estate. They will take effect in up to nine months. Sixteen percent of West Bank households depend on agriculture, but settlement goods are a small share of UK-Israel trade.

The announcement came before Burnham's first visit to the US as prime minister. France and Canada's leaders said they would take similar action. Former UN officials Mary Robinson and Helen Clark urged the EU to follow suit.
The UK is among 12 countries sanctioning Israeli settlements. Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden pledged to support further action. The Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, and Norway have already banned or are banning settlement goods.
