Mother and daughter killed rushing to shelter during Kyiv missile attack

Olena Rozhniativska and her 18-year-old daughter Kateryna were killed while running to a shelter during a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv early August 1, according to a Facebook post by their employer, the Ukrainian supermarket chain Silpo.

Rozhniativska worked as a project manager in the merchandising department of the operations office, and Kateryna was a sales assistant in the fresh produce section of a store, the company said.

The broader assault, which involved ballistic missiles and drones, killed at least nine people and wounded 33 others across Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities reported. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 17 of the wounded were taken to hospital.

Falling debris damaged a five-story residential building in the Solomianskyi District, where two people died and eight were injured, including two children, according to the state emergency service. In the Darnytskyi District, seven were killed and 14 injured.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said air defenses downed only one of 27 ballistic missiles due to a lack of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems. He called the need for more such systems a top priority.

Russia's defense ministry said it carried out a "massive strike" on Ukrainian military-industrial facilities and logistics centers in Kyiv.
